Beach Cleanups & Programs Recap: March 2026

Written by Ally Alejo | Mar 31, 2026 4:23:04 AM

Check out what Surfrider Ventura County was up to this past month!

Respect the Rincon Parkway - March 14th

Our record-setting warm weather brings more visitors to the Rincon Parkway Day Use section and, unfortunately, the amount of trash and cigarette butts doubles. At our March cleanup, 30 volunteers picked up over 830 cigarette butts, which otherwise would have clogged our marine ecosystems in the Santa Barbara Channel.

Keep sharing your love for the ocean and make a difference to our local marine ecosystems in the Santa Barbara Channel at our next Rincon Parkway Cleanup on Saturday, April 11th, at the Rincon Parkway Day Use section!

Ormond Beach Cleanups - March 21st

This month, 37 volunteers, including Galen, Chiara, and Amelia, picked up 1,048 pounds of trash, including a bicycle, a flatscreen TV, and some tires.

Unfortunately, Ormond Lagoon is remote enough that it is subject to illegal dumping. Additionally, one of the main waterways that feeds into the lagoon is open and a temptation to people who dump trash. In addition to cleaning up this trash, Surfrider Ventura County is working on upstream solutions. But these things will take time and money.

Do you part by joining us at our next Ormond Beach Cleanup!

Ventura Promenade/C St. Cleanups - March 28th

Many thanks to all the volunteers who came out to the C St. Promenade cleanup on this beautiful spring day. The ocean needs more friends like you! We think the beach at the Ventura Promenade is probably the cleanest in Ventura County right now!๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’™โ˜€๏ธ

Port Hueneme Beach Park Dune Restoration - Cancelled

We unfortunately had to cancel this month's restoration event due to heavy winds and limited parking due to a Port Hueneme event. However, on March 10th and 11th, California Conservation Corps Camarillo 4 and 1 firefighters came out to install 2,322 feet of post and rope fencing. We are very grateful for the hard work and professionalism they showed in performing this important conservation work. Hopefully, the fencing will cut down on folks walking and driving through the dunes and will highlight the importance of dune restoration.

Help us restore this critical habitat โ€“ we meet in Port Hueneme on the first Saturday of each month at 9 AM. Sign up here!

Blue Water Task Force

Blue Water Task Force Lab Technicians - Foothill Technology High School Team (11 other students not pictured here)

Our regular sampling and testing season ends on March 31, 2026, and we say goodbye to our lab team at Foothill Technology High School, who processed our water samples for reporting during our 2025 -2026 season. Huge thanks to Mrs. Huntโ€™s Environmental Science and Biology students for their time and energy in pursuit of understanding how good science informs the local community by helping people avoid contact with ocean water that might cause waterborne illness.

Despite NOAA Fisheries and Wildlife warning about a Massive Marine Heat Wave hitting our ocean, we did not measure any major temperature changes in March that might impact ocean water quality at our favorite beaches. Our beaches overall met the state standard for safe water entry except for a few beaches.

Alongside the Los Angeles State Water Quality Board, we are monitoring water quality at Mondos due to strong chemical-smelling discharges into Mondos Drain. We will report any findings that might impact public health at Mondos.
