Check out what Surfrider Ventura County was up to this month at our beach cleanups!
This May, Respect the Rincon Parkway hosted a duel cleanup with 23 spectacular volunteers, including the Santa Barbara Yale Club. Volunteers were able to retrieve potentially ocean threatening debris from entering the ocean at Rincon Parkway Day Use Section and Rincon Beach County Park, picking up over 1,250 pieces of micro-trash.
"Microtrash, or plastic or styrofoam pieces roughly the size of a grain of rice, collects in the wrack (deposit of kelp, seagrass, seaweed), where coastal birds feed. Microtrash is confused for bugs or insect eggs." —Joy Downing Riley, Respect the Rincon Parkway Lead

This month at Ormond, our 28 amazing volunteers picked up 1,580 pounds of trash! We got a unique look at Ormond on The Nature Conservancy’s property. Volunteers had the opportunity to take a short walk through the property, down to one of the waterways that outfalls to Ormond Lagoon.
As part of the Ormond Beach Restoration and Public Access Plan (OBRAP), this area is set to be restored in a way that balances habitat restoration and protection with improved public access. We are excited to see what is in store for one of the most important wetland restoration opportunities in southern California. For more OBRAP information, click here or follow their Facebook group.
We want to especially thank the Ventura Training Center and naval base volunteers for coming out and doing the heavy lifting at this month’s event. This crew of amazing individuals helped facilitate the trash removal and placement in the dumpsters. It was not an easy task hauling 1,580 pounds of trash, but they did it with a smile!
See you next third Saturday at Ormond!
On this beautiful spring morning, 96 community volunteers joined a "bare necessities” crew of 4 core Surfrider volunteers to pick up 151 pounds of trash and recycling. With a shortage of core Surfrider volunteers to run the cleanup, our friends from Ventura Training Center (VTC) Battalion 21, led by Anti-Recidivism Coalition Life Coach Jose Olmedo, saved the day by helping us sort and weigh trash, break down the cleanup, and take supplies back to storage. The VTC crew are rock stars we can always count on!
