Check out what Surfrider Ventura County was up to this month at our beach cleanups!
We are happy to report we picked up less trash than usual at our October 12th cleanup as beachgoers settle into Fall routines. Our 15 wonderful volunteers—including 3 middle school ocean stewards—picked up 40 pounds less of trash than last month. We picked up 450 cigarette butts, nitro canisters, 150 nails, and other burned construction materials.
We're excited to welcome two new long-time environmentalists, Brian and Tracy, to our volunteer cleanup roster, and thanks to everyone who was able to make it out this month to RRP!
Join us at RRP the second Saturday of every month!
This month we focused on a different area of Ormond, cleaning up along the Bubbling Springs Waterway in Port Hueneme. On October 19th, our 25 amazing volunteers picked up 198 pounds of trash from the waterway that outfalls to Ormond Lagoon!
A special shout out to the dynamic duo, Geselle Tliche and Melissa Davis, who went above and beyond at this cleanup. Geselle picked up over 40 pounds of trash and Melissa picked up over 20 pounds of micro-trash pieces in and around the waterway.
See you next month at Ormond!
On October 26th, 89 community volunteers came out on this beautiful autumn Saturday and removed 146 pounds of trash and recycling and 2,750 cigarette butts from the Ventura Promenade and beaches. Two of the groups joining us were the CA Conservation Corps and Kaiser Permanente. Many thanks to them and the 8 core volunteers who ran the cleanup!
Join us at C Street next month!
Private Cleanup with TMJ Stryker - October 4
On the morning of October 4th, 59 TMJ Stryker employees and family members came out to cleanup Ormond. Meeting at the end of Perkins Road in Oxnard, the volunteers picked up 520 pounds of trash from along the waterway, including a children’s electric toy car, tires, an ice chest, and pieces of a mattress.
For the second year in a row, TMJ Stryker has chosen to sponsor a private cleanup through our Sponsored Cleanups Program with their employees. Last year, they cleaned up at the Ventura Promenade/C Street. They chose Ormond this year because they wanted to maximize their impact at an area inundated with a multitude of environmental issues leaving behind thousands of pounds of trash.
We are super stoked that TMJ Stryker chose to work with us again this year, and hope to continue working together in the future. Sponsored cleanups help support our beach cleanup programs year-round, so we cannot thank them enough for supporting Surfrider VC!
If you own or know of a business that would like to host a private sponsored cleanup with us, please contact aalejo@ventura.surfrider.org for more information.
Private Cleanup with St. Jude's School - October 25
In the afternoon on October 25th, we were joined by 30 amazing student volunteers and 7 chaperones at Ormond Beach for a cleanup. After their field trip in the area, St Jude's 3rd grade class met us on the sand and picked up over 20 pounds of trash from the beach!
The students were enthusiastic about cleaning up the beach, all 30 even raising their hands when asked if they would participate in a beach cleanup again. It is always amazing seeing the future generation of environmental stewards actively engaging in boots-on-the-ground efforts to protect our oceans, waves, and beaches!
If you are interested in having your class participate in a private educational cleanup, please email AAlejo@ventura.surfrider.org!
