Hello Everyone!
We know how precious Ormond Beach, wetlands, island and dunes are to our community and our environment. I do remember thinking, "Wow, we have to wait 6 months to be able to continue our clean up efforts." And here we are as Snowy Plover and Least Tern nesting season is about to end... With COVID-19, we have new guidelines as to how the clean ups will be organized. Please read on to see how you can get involved.
The really good news is that the beach and dunes look AMAZING for the first 1/2 of a mile off Hueneme’s parking lot “C”. The bad news is that we have to walk about 20 minutes now to get to the bad trash area.
The dunes trash is our target for the week of Sept. 12th-19th. If you find it difficult to walk that far, please consider a clean-up on the island which is scheduled for Sat. Sept. 26th and Oct. 3rd. The clean ups are in groups up to 10 people that will last for about 2 hours. This includes walk time.This video I took recently is inspiring. I met you all when this was a mess. We navigated row after row, picking up trash in the tidelines and thanks to our hard work, look how beautiful it is! (We’ll get the sofa!)
1-Please RSVP to me AND/OR sign up on this Google Sheet, including the number of people in your group, at Chair@Ventura.Surfrider.Org and specify your preferred location, day and clean up time.
2-Each group must be familiar with each other. Ie: Family, co-workers, friends who already hang out with each other.
3-You must sign a waiver and bring a mask. I will provide gloves, trash bags, grabbers, hand sanitizer, buckets, water and snacks.
4-You must have no symptoms of illness 10 days prior to the day of. Ie: fever, cough, sore throat, achiness, etc.
5-You must be physically able to walk on the sand for ½ hour to and from the trash site.
If this is too difficult, please consider the island clean-up.Kinda hard core, but worth it! The most important thing to realize is that this is old encampment trash. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Maintenance is easy-peasy. PLEASE help me finish making Ormond Beach, dunes, lagoon and island trash free. If we don’t get it before the next rainy season, the lagoon will breach and this trash will get sucked out to the beach and into our beautiful ocean. Yikes!After Sept. 12th, solo clean ups are encouraged as well.
