Communications Coordinator Position

Surfrider Ventura is looking for a volunteer to serve a two-year term on our Executive Committee for 2026-2027. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for crafting and disseminating information for the public that promotes the chapter's work, helps engage volunteers, and attracts new supporters. This includes sourcing and collecting the content from Executive Committee members, program leads, and initiative leads along with utilizing Surfrider Foundation provided content. 

Content Creation & Management:

  • Developing Content Strategy: Working with the Executive Committee to create a simple communications strategy that aligns with the chapters goals. 
  • Crafting Engaging Content: Creating compelling content for website copy, social media posts, and email newsletters, highlighting volunteer opportunities and the chapters impact.
  • Managing the chapter website and sending regular newsletter emails via Hubspot. Updating and maintaining the chapter’s website and social media presence, ensuring fresh and informative content.

Outreach & Engagement:

  • Promoting Volunteer Opportunities: Working in coordination with the Volunteer Activity Coordinator position, disseminate the volunteer opportunities through the appropriate channels. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for posting on the Golden Platform.
  • Managing Public Relations: Responding to media inquiries and connecting them to the Chapter Chair and appropriate chapter leader.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • External Communication: Keeping volunteers informed about upcoming events, opportunities, and organizational news through newsletters, email updates, or social media posts.
  • Collaborating with Committees: Working collaboratively with the individual chapter committees, and other team leaders to ensure all communication efforts are aligned and effective.

Optional Responsibilities Based on Experience Level:

  • Building Relationships with Media: Nurturing relationships with media outlets to secure positive press coverage about the chapter’'s work and volunteer stories.
  • Staying Informed: Keeping abreast of current trends and best practices in online communication and social media marketing.
  • Data Analysis: Tracking and analyzing website and social media metrics to measure the effectiveness of communication efforts. Surfrider Foundation Headquarters can provide metrics for websites, Golden Platform and Hubspot. In most cases, the chapter's social media pages are set up by the chapter and we would not have access to the data. 

Qualities for the Role: 

  • Strong Writing & Editing Skills: The ability to craft clear, concise, and engaging content.
  • Technology Savvy: Ability to learn the Hubspot platform for website management and email marketing.
  • Organizational Skills & Time Management: Juggling multiple tasks, deadlines, and content creation requires strong organizational skills and effective time management.
  • Interpersonal & Collaboration Skills: Collaborating effectively with committee members and volunteers is vital for ensuring consistent messaging.
  • Creativity & Storytelling: The ability to craft compelling narratives that capture the chapters work and impact is a valuable asset.

Time Commitment: 5-7 hours per week: This considers content creation, website/social media management, basic outreach, and communication with volunteers. We can also consider breaking this postion into 2 or 3 roles for different people to cover.
