Thanks to our 20 volunteers who collected over 85 pounds of trash and recycling, including some very heavy debris from the beach, before Mother’s Day at the Rincon Parkway Day Use section.
Also, a big shout-out to State Parks for removing a 3-ton roll of asphalt paper with their tractor, near Emma Wood State Beach, that was polluting the ocean.
Keep sharing your love for the ocean and make a difference to our local marine ecosystems in the Santa Barbara Channel at our next Rincon Parkway Cleanup on the second Saturday of the month!
While our cleanups along Bubbling Spring don't get the tonnage we see at Ormond Lagoon they are still very impactful! 44 volunteers removed 197 pounds of trash (including this bike) from this natural spring that flows into Ormond Lagoon. While the birds are nesting on Ormond Beach, we’re getting trash out of the watershed that feeds the lagoon!
Do you part by joining us at our next Ormond Beach Cleanup!
Big thanks to the 145 community volunteers who picked up 140 pounds of trash, 46 pounds of recycling, and 1,500 cigarette butts at the Ventura Promenade and beaches on May 23. Several groups joined us, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Oxnard School District, and Impact, all the way from Lancaster! 🌊💙☀️
Join us at our next C Street Cleanup!

Thanks to the help of 27 volunteers, including students from the Oak Park High Surfrider Club, the Port Hueneme dune restoration area is looking great! Volunteers removed 1,900 pounds of invasive Ice Plant, Bermuda Grass, and European Sea Rocket.
Returning volunteers Cassidy and Joan planted 17 Beach Poppy (Eschscholzia californica var. maritima) plants that were grown for us by Growing Works Nursery. These complement the poppies popping up from seed we planted earlier this year.
Help us restore this critical habitat – we meet in Port Hueneme on the first Saturday of each month at 9 AM. Sign up here!
Ocean water quality at our local Ventura County beaches has been consistently safe for water entry this past month. Follow our VC Environmental Health Division's weekly water quality reports at 40 beaches via their app vcsafebeaches.
We have completed our annual season report for our 2025 - 2026 season. See how your favorite beaches' water quality fared throughout the wet weather season here:

THANK YOU to Victor Tellez, the Resident Manager at the Sycamore Senior Apartments in Oxnard, for reaching out to have two ashcans installed at their complex. And… a BIG thank you to Joan Tharp, HOTYB co-lead, who is monitoring/emptying those ashcans and shared that in the first week after their installation, they were half full when she went to check on their usage.
We are still in need of volunteers to pick up butts in ‘hotspots” where cans can't be installed due to tampering. If you would like to help out, please contact jmarciel@ventura.surfrider.org.
The Rise Above Plastic Program, which has helped Ventura County stop/reduce the use of EPS (styrofoam), plastic bags, and fireworks, will soon be instituting a new Program to encourage organizations to use plastic-free alternatives as promotional giveaways to continue working to rid our environment of plastic contaminants. The new Program will be called Plastic Free Alternatives Please (PFAP). Please contact jmarciel@ventura.surfrider.org or jtharp@ventura.surfrider.org if you would like to help us with this new Program.
Also, check out this webpage for LOTS of information on plastic pollution and what the Surfrider Foundation has achieved since 2005 to stop the flow of plastic into our environment, and click here for an amazing interactive map of plastic reduction policies in the U.S.
