Federal Board Ruling Ensures Coastal Railroad Projects Must Adhere to the Coastal Act

Victory! The federal Surface Transportation Board denied NCTD's petition for exemption from environmental review for railroad bluff stabilization in Del Mar.

After three years of deliberation and uncertainty, the federal Surface Transportation Board declined to rule in North County Transit District's (NCTD) petition for exemption from environmental review for a bluff stabilization work and a security fencing project for the railroad in Del Mar.  Relocation of the LOSSAN rail corridor off of Del Mar's eroding bluffs is a long-term, high priority campaign for the San Diego County Chapter.

If granted, NCTD's petition could have thwarted momentum from the rail relocation effort, which regional transit agency SANDAG has committed to completing by 2035. Worse, the decision would have potentially weakened coastal protections for railroad projects statewide. Learn more about the decision HERE.
