Beach Cleanups & Programs Recap: September 2026

Check out what Surfrider Ventura County was up to this past month!

Port Hueneme Dune Restoration - September 5th

When we are out doing dune restoration (like these volunteers were doing on September 5th) we occasionally get asked "why are you pulling out all of the plants?" Our volunteers are trained to pull out invasive non-native species like Bermuda Grass and Ice Plant. These species have crept from the Port Hueneme beach park landscaping into the dunes, and compete with and can strangle out native dune species. So all summer we've been clearing space in preparation to plant native seeds and seedlings in anticipation of fall and winter rains.

Come see what we're up to every first Saturday in Port Hueneme!

Respect the Rincon Parkway - September 12th

This month, sixteen volunteers persevered through our humid and warm beach cleanup conditions to pick up 86 pounds of trash and recyclable materials after Labor Day celebrations left behind food trash and ocean gear.

Keep sharing your love for the ocean and make a difference to our local marine ecosystems in the Santa Barbara Channel at our next Rincon Parkway Cleanup on the second Saturday of the month!

Ormond Beach Cleanups - September 19th

Over 100 volunteers came out for our September Ormond cleanup—which was also California Coastal Cleanup Day! Special thanks to Alpa Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and Prince Hall Masons and Shriners. We were joined by volunteers from the City of Port Hueneme and picked up 1100 pounds of trash.

Mystery...why are we seeing so many plastic shotgun wads showing up on Ventura County beaches this summer!?

Do your part by joining us at our next Ormond Beach Cleanup!

Ventura Promenade/C St. Cleanups - September 26th

Many thanks to everyone who came out to the C-Street Cleanup and removed 100 pounds of trash and ~600 cigarette butts from the beach—just in time for the Hands Across the Sand event!

Join us at our next C Street Cleanup!

Blue Water Task Force

Ocean water quality at Ventura County beaches throughout August remained at state standards for safe water entry. After our .5 inch September 6th rain, however, our waterways received the first flush of indicator bacteria that could cause waterborne illness. The VC Environmental Health Advisory Division posted a rain advisory after Hurricane Marie provided an out-of-season rain event. The CA EPA advises avoiding all contact with ocean water and freshwater (Ventura River, Santa Clara River, Malibu Creek) for 72 hours after a storm event.

Our Summer BWTF volunteer, Abby, is measuring the dissolved oxygen levels in the Ventura River at Big Rock Preserve as part of our cyanobacteria survey for harmful freshwater algae blooms that we are conducting with the State Water Quality Board.

Local Environmental Nonprofit Community Meet & Greet

On September 23rd, we joined forces with the City of Ventura Environmental Sustainability and other local nonprofits to share more about the work we do. Surfrider VC's very own Joan Tharp spoke alongside a panel of other local activists and nonprofit staff.

Thank you to Ventura Environmental Sustainability for inviting us!
