Beach Cleanups Recap: February 2025

Check out what Surfrider Ventura County was up to this month at our beach cleanups!

Respect the Rincon Parkway - February 8

Members of the California Conservation Corps at the Rincon Parkway Day Use section 2.8.2025.

We were joined by our largest clean up crew ever on Saturday, February 8th, which included Cub Scout Troop 3192 and a group from the California Conservation Corps. We picked up over 150 pounds of trash, 35 pounds of recycling materials and a whopping 650 cigarette butts.

Join us at RRP the second Saturday of February!

Ormond Beach - February 15

On the morning of February 15, our 30 Ormond volunteers joined us to cleanup at the end of Perkins Road, picking up 1,440 pounds of trash!

"My experience with the Ormond Cleanup this month was exciting and it gave me hope for the future of the health of our beaches," said Ormond Beach Cleanups Intern, Allen Walton.

A huge thank you to all the friends of the ocean who came out to lend a helping hand, especially the Ventura Training Center who had just spent over a month fighting the recent Southern California fires.

After a couple of rain events and a short hiatus from cleanups at Perkins, there was a lot of trash to be picked up. Our volunteers used up every last trash bag we had, and still wanted to go pickup more. Even with all our hard work, we will tentatively be hosting our March 15th cleanup here again to try and get what's left.

Ormond Beach - February 22

For the second time this month, volunteers came out to Ormond to cleanup—this time, on the beachside! Rains brought tons of trash down the waterways/lagoon and out onto the beach. Our 25 volunteers picked up 1,350 pounds of trash this sunny Saturday, bringing our February total to 2,790 pounds overall. We were able to place dumpsters on the sand before nesting season for the Western Snowy Plover starts in March, when we'll have to be more cautious on the sand as to not disturb the wildlife.

We are super grateful to everyone who came out, including folks who came out twice this month. Thank you to the Ventura Training Center for joining us both Saturdays at Ormond and doing the heavy-lifting! We are also super thankful for Port Hueneme City Council-member Steven Gama for co-planning this event with us and bringing even more volunteers out onto the sand. Steven Gama is out at Ormond/Hueneme Beach every Saturday cleaning up.

See you next month at Ormond!

C Street - February 22

On February 22nd, 74 community volunteers came out to the Ventura Promenade on a beautiful winter Saturday morning (that felt much more like spring) and removed 128.2 pounds of trash, 9.3 pounds of recycling, and 1,850 cigarette butts from the Ventura Promenade and beaches. Many thanks to them and the 7 early-rising, hard-working core volunteers who made it possible!
