Beach Cleanups Recap: June 2024

Check out what Surfrider Ventura County was up to this month at our beach cleanups!

Respect the Rincon Parkway - June 8

Our new intern Isabel Raigoza and dad Saul were up front and center for a successful Rincon Parkway cleanup this month! Isabel has devoted her college career to the field of communication and to studying and protecting the ocean. We are stoked to have her on board!

Despite the June-gloom, there was lots of joy at the Day Use section, including some dolphin sightings! Our 11 volunteers worked hard and removed 68 pounds of trash from the beach. Special thanks to the four trainee firefighters from the Ventura Training Center, who helped us pick up derelict fire rings containing chemically treated briquettes and burned wood (please note fires and fire pit making on the RP is prohibited by Municipal Code and its carbon debris is a threat to the ocean).

Check out our stats:

  • 169 plastic fragments
  • 625 tar blobs
  • 4.5 pounds of recyclables
  • 138 pounds of briquettes/burned firewood
  • 68 pounds of trash

Ormond Beach - June 15

ISD-2024-Cover (1)

On June 15th from 8am-12pm, we celebrated International Surfing Day with a Surf Session + Cleanup at Ormond/Hueneme Beach! Joined by Coastal Keepers, our volunteers spent some time in the water, followed by a beach cleanup up to the lagoon outfall. Astoundingly, our 35 volunteers picked up 2,400 pounds of trash.

We didn’t just celebrate by enjoying the sun, sand, and surf—we also indulged in some delicious Rolling Pin donuts and Coastal Keepers’ customary coffee & conchas. After the cleanup, we had an opportunity drawing for volunteers to win ISD merch, and heard from Surfrider’s Central California Sr. Regional Manager Bill Hickman on what International Surfing Day is all about.

Started in 2005, International Surfing Day (ISD) is an international celebration of the love of surfing for all people to enjoy. The day was established by the Surfrider Foundation and partners to raise awareness and support for our world’s beaches and coastal environments. We set out to honor this day by combining surfing with cleaning up the beach—a way to recognize the importance of recreation and enjoyment while promoting coastal stewardship.

See you next third Saturday at Ormond!

C Street - June 22

This month marked our first summer C-Street cleanup! On June 22, 164 community volunteers removed 246 lbs. of trash and recycling from the Ventura Promenade and beach. We had special groups from CA Conservation Corps and Kaiser Permanente join us. Special thanks to these groups and our wonderful core volunteers for coming out and supporting!

Join us at C Street every fourth Saturday of the month!

Sponsored/Private Cleanups

On June 24th, X-Games Ventura, Visit Ventura, and the City of Ventura sponsored a public cleanup with us as a part of their “leave it better than we found it” initiative!

Photos provided by @VisitVentura.

We hosted the cleanup at C-Street, where all participants received a single-day ticket to the X-Games Ventura. Our volunteers picked up 81 pounds of trash from the beach and promenade, and cleared away hundreds of pieces of microtrash and microplastics. We were stoked to have been able to offer this opportunity to our Surfrider VC community!
