This past month, the Cal State Channel Islands Surfrider Club has continued to make strides towards our goals for the semester. In addition to collaborating on habitat restoration at Ormond Beach with the Channel Islands Audubon Chapter, our chapter also hosted a beach cleanup on March 9th at Surfer’s Knoll. We collected over 20 lbs of trash off the beach, including over 30 spray paint cans, 15 tennis balls, a speaker, a propane tank, and a full set of blinds!
For the month of April, our club will be participating in its largest sustainability awareness event of the semester. During the week of Earth Day (April 22nd–24th) our club will be hosting a campus wide #TrashChallenge cleanup with grand prizes for the group who collects the most trash. We will be collaborating with multiple campus clubs such as CI Audubon, CI 4Ocean Club, and Student Government. Prior to the cleanup, we will host a table with interactive games to educate the public on the lifespan of plastics in our environment. In addition, we will be offering custom stickers, keychains, and reusable bamboo utensils to attendees. There will be a limited number of reusable utensil sets being handed out for free at the beginning of the festival (11am–2pm).
The cleanup will take place on Wednesday, April 24th from 3pm-5pm. Anyone, including people outside of the CSUCI community, are welcome to attend the Earth Week Festival and the campus cleanup. Groups are asked to check in from 2:30–3pm. The grand prize winners will be announced after all the trash has been weighed, around 5:30pm.
