In January, the City of Ventura released a request for qualifications for a Ventura Waterfront Project the City is proposing with responses due by June 12th, 2025. According to the RFQ:
"The City of Ventura (City) is seeking to identify a qualified developer to develop a waterfront project (with related amenities) and parking structure with active ground-floor uses in downtown Ventura. The proposed project site is located just south of the California Plaza and Crowne Plaza hotel. An existing dilapidated parking structure and surface parking are currently located on the site which will need to be demolished and redeveloped with at least 350 spaces for public use." The RFQ also mentions, "Flexibility of height, the plan can range from 3 stories to as high as the adjacent Crowne Plaza at 12 stories."

While it's very unlikely the Coastal Commission would approve a 12 story structure, there are additional concerns with developing a major project on the promenade, adjacent to the beach. Especially when we are actively moving the bike path and parking inland further up Surfers' Point to address natural erosion and expected sea level rise.
You can help prevent a bad waterfront project by speaking up. If you live in the City of Ventura, let your City Council representative know you are concerned about this project and would like a transparent approval process with opportunities for public input. It's very early in the process and there are not any public hearings or public comment periods yet. Stay tuned to future blogs, our e-newsletter, and / or our social media for updates.
