Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) is one of the world's largest annual preservation and protection events and volunteer efforts for our ocean, waves and beaches. Surfrider Foundation chapters engage and motivate their communities to take action at local beach cleanups. The cumulative result is not only a cleaner and healthier coastline but also a raised consciousness for accessible actions people can integrate into their lives to promote healthy beaches on a daily basis.
The Impact: CCD 2021
This year's preliminary results for all of Ventura County remind us that it only takes a small group of people to make a big impact.
- 1,654 volunteers
- 13,498 pounds of trash
- 453 pounds of recyclables
- 29.87 miles covered
- 227 volunteers brought they own reusable supplies
Since its inception 35 years ago, over 16 million volunteers have collected more than 340 million pounds of trash across 100 countries in celebration of ICCD (full article).
Do you care about addressing issues such as plastic pollution, climate change, and/or clean water? Have you always been interested becoming a volunteer with one of our programs, but want to know a little more about the positions? Tune in to our Volunteer Recruitment Night on October 5th, from 6:30-8pm to hear from our program leads and hear about new opportunities!
Beach cleanups are a powerful tool in the fight against plastic pollution. Not only do they help spread awareness of the plastic pollution crisis, but they can provide valuable insights into what is ending up on our beaches and in our waterways. By collecting data during cleanups, we are able to get a clearer picture of the types of products most commonly ending up as pollutioin. Surfrider then uses this data to help inform policy decisions and push for plastic reduction legislation. Spoiler alert: Single-use plastics are consistently found during beach cleanups!
